Half a million people over the age of 60 go for 5 to 6 days a week without speaking to anyone. And nearly half say that television is their main company.
Feeling cut off from people you love and who love you, isn't age-related. But there's no denying that if you're older, the chances of feeling acutely lonely increase dramatically. It may be triggered by the loss of a partner, the loss of a much loved pet, or family who have moved away. It may run even deeper than that.
Loneliness hurts.
Our Helpers and Heroes raise awareness on how to spot loneliness and reach out. Saying hello, having a conversation, dropping in on a neighbour who's just lost someone is a vital part of bringing someone back to the community.
We throw them a lifeline.
Our Community Lifeline is committed to helping the over 60s engage with - and learn to love - technology. Working with our charity partners, we are actively involved in helping older people feel comfortable and confident using digital technology, iPads and Face Time. That way they can often reconnect with long lost friends and family.
"Thanks to Supporting You, I'm overcoming my fears about technology. I'd never even used a computer before, but now I'm proud to say I shop online. That's such an asset to me, as visiting shops is becoming increasingly difficult."
